11th Grade

8th Grade:

As an Eighth grader you will . . .
  • Open a “College Information” folder in your file locker on Edline and begin keeping information there for your:
    • college resume'
    • Colleges of interest
    • Awards
    • Clubs and organizations of active participation both within the school and civic community
    • Class or club offices
    • Service work in the school and community
    • Course work that is reflected in the school transcript
  • Begin developing a clear understanding of TOPS requirements and start tracing your course work. (A template for keeping track of your course work is on Edline under “Counselors’ Corner.” Remember, your high school transcript grades factor into a GPA that helps to determine a possible TOPS award)
  • Begin working with the Naviance software to guide your college application process as well as exploration of various careers · Get involved in at least one club or extracurricular activity at school
  • Develop at least one academic goal for each term; determine strategies to achieve that goal; review that goal and your strategies with your counselor

9th Grade:

As a Freshman you will . . .
  • Continue your extracurricular activity, perhaps expanding your interests
  • Consider running for a club or class office
  • Continue to update your college folder
  • Begin working on a college resume using the format suggested in the “College Corner” section of Edline
  • Continue to explore other positions of leadership either at school or within the community
  • Keep current with service hours
  • Expand your use of Naviance in terms of review of various colleges and universities
  • Expand your investigation of various careers
  • Be consistent with your use of the ACT software letting your individual score on the August practice test guide your usage
  • Establish a goal for the year or expand the goal selected in 8th grade year, reviewing the goal with your counselor

10th Grade:

As a Sophomore you will . . .
  • Continue your extracurricular activity, perhaps expanding your interests
  • Continue to update your college folder
  • Expand your college resume
  • Continue to explore other positions of leadership either at school or within the community
  • Keep current with service hours
  • Expand your use of Naviance in terms of review of various colleges and universities making annotations about schools of interest
  • Continue exploring various careers with possibly an apprenticeship for a career of interest
  • Be even more consistent with your use of the ACT software letting your individual score on the August practice test guide your usage
  • Continue establishing a yearly goal or expand on a previous goal, reviewing the goal with your counselor
  • Consider participating in the summer college tour
  • Begin attending local college fairs to more personally learn about individual colleges and universities
  • Meet with college and university representative who come for announced campus visits
  • Begin talking with your parents about the different colleges and universities of interest to you and perhaps visit any of these during family vacations
  • Explore the possibility of attending Close Up or participating in university sponsored summer academic or performing arts-based programs

11th Grade:

As a Junior you will . . . 

  • Continue your extracurricular activity (s)
  • Continue to update your college folder
  • Expand your college resume
  • Continue to explore other positions of leadership either at school or within the community
  • Keep current with service hours
  • Use Naviance much more deliberately and consistently beginning to narrow your search of various colleges and universities according to your previous annotations about your schools of interest
  • Start narrowing your investigation and research of careers; work with the counselors and family members and friends to begin an apprenticeship to determine if a specific career continues to hold your interest
  • Use the ACT software in a more disciplined way, using your individual score on the August practice test zero in on areas for your concentration
  • Explore the possibility of attending Close Up or participating in university sponsored summer academic or performing arts-based programs
  • Continue establishing a yearly goal or expand on a previous goal, reviewing the goal with your counselor
  • Consider participating in the summer college tour
  • Attend local college fairs to more personally learn about individual colleges and universities
  • Meet with college and university representatives who come for announced campus visits
  • Continue talking with your parents in order to narrow your list of colleges; use your college visit days to see these campuses in person; talk with the college counselor and the dean of students about this process
  • Register for the ACT and the prep course the semester that you are taking math
  • Begin searching for scholarships for which you have the application criteria; check with the college counselor and on the “Counselors’ Corner” for possible scholarship opportunities
  • Begin applying to your selected colleges and universities online during the summer of your junior year.

12th Grade:

As a Senior you will . . .

  • Bring college application forms and additional college requested components to the college counselor for each college to which you have applied
  • Bring your college resume’ in to the college counselor
  • Follow-up with universities to which you have applied to ensure that they have received all components to your application/scholarship requests
  • Apply for all scholarships for which you have the necessary application criteria; check with the college counselor and on the “Counselors’ Corner” for possible scholarship opportunities
  • If not satisfied with your ACT/SAT scores, register for that test and the prep course (ACT; check with the college counselor about ways to prepare for the SAT) the semester that you are taking math
  • Bring in your acceptance letters and scholarship award letters to the college counselor, even if you are not planning to attend that particular university
